Change a Google-billed subscription

Here's what to know if your HBO Max subscription is billed through Google.

To find who bills you for HBO Max, go to Manage an HBO Max subscription.

Note As of April 20, 2026, Google billing is no longer available for new or returning subscribers. Any new subscription started on an Android device is billed directly through us. This change doesn't impact existing Google-billed subscribers.

Which plan do I have?
  1. In HBO Max, do one of the following:
    • Phone, tablet, or computer: Choose your profile and then Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose the Settings icon cog (lower left) and then Subscription.
      (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  2. Here you'll find your current subscription plan.

When is my next billing date?

Your subscription automatically renews on your next billing date. Here's how to find your next billing date:

  1. Open the Play Store on your Android phone or tablet or go to play.google.com.
  2. Choose your profile icon.
  3. Choose Payments & subscriptions and then Subscriptions.
  4. Find HBO Max in your list of subscriptions and take note of your next payment date.
How do I cancel?
Things to know
  • Your HBO Max subscription automatically renews until you cancel it.
  • Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel your subscription.
  • Cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid further charges.

Here's how to cancel your Google-billed subscription:

Android phone or tablet
  1. Open the Play Store app on the device where you started your subscription.
  2. Choose your profile icon.
  3. Choose Payments & subscriptions and then Subscriptions.
  4. Choose HBO Max and then Cancel subscription.
Pause payments
Instead of canceling, you can pause your subscription for up to 3 months. Google won't bill you and you won't be able to stream while your subscription is paused. You can continue streaming until your subscription is paused at the end of your current billing period.
Web
  1. Go to g.co/play/subscriptions.
  2. Make sure you're signed in to the Google account that has your HBO Max subscription. (To switch accounts, choose your profile icon and then Switch account).
  3. Find HBO Max in your list of subscriptions.
  4. Choose Manage and then Cancel subscription.
Pause payments
Instead of canceling, you can pause your subscription for up to 3 months. Google won't bill you and you won't be able to stream while your subscription is paused. You can continue streaming until your subscription is paused at the end of your current billing period.

Once canceled, you should get an email from Google confirming your cancellation.

You can resubscribe to HBO Max at any time.

Try these things:

  • Make sure you're signed in with the same Google account you used to purchase your subscription.
  • Go to the Android device where you started your HBO Max subscription and view your subscriptions using the steps above.

How do I change my plan?

Here's how to change your plan on an Android device:

Android phone or tablet
  1. Open the Play Store app and make sure you're signed in to the Google account that has your HBO Max subscription.
  2. Choose Payments & Subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Tap on your HBO Max subscription.
  4. Choose Cancel subscription.
    You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing period.
  5. Once your subscription has expired, go to HBOMax.com and resubscribe.

You should get an email from Google confirming your plan change.

Web
  1. Go to play.google.com and choose your profile picture (top of screen).
  2. Choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to change your plan.

When will my plan change take effect?

The effective date depends on the change:

  • If you change to a lower-priced plan, your plan change will happen on your next billing date.
  • If you change to a higher-priced plan, your plan change happens immediately. Google will give you a credit for the remaining time on your subscription and apply it to your new plan. Your next billing date will be adjusted once the credit is used.
  • If you only change your billing period (monthly or yearly), your change will happen on your next billing date.
My subscription is paused. What should I do?

If you're getting a 'Subscription Paused' message, it may be due to a payment error (or you may have paused your subscription).
