HBO Max Standard and Basic plans
HBO Max subscriptions are available through many providers (your provider is who you signed up through or who bills you for HBO Max). Depending on how you sign up, you can choose a subscription plan (Standard or Basic) and a billing period. To sign up, see Sign up for HBO Max.
Here are the plans:
Standard plan
- Watch in Full HD (1080p) with select titles in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos
- Stream on 3 screens at a time
- Download up to 30 titles at a time
Basic plan
- Watch in HD (720p)
- Stream on 1 screen at a time (phone, tablet, TV, or computer)
- Download up to 5 titles at a time

Both plans have the same great content:

- Thousands of hours of series, movies, and new exclusive programming (Max Originals)
- A robust selection of acquired series and movies
When you sign up at HBOMax.com or through an app store, you can choose your plan (Standard or Basic) and your billing period (monthly or yearly). Standard and Basic plans are available through the following providers:
- HBOMax.com (HBO)
- Apple App Store
- Google Play
- Samsung TV
The Standard plan (monthly billing) is also available through KPN and Vodafone Ziggo.

If you already subscribe to HBO Max, here's how to find your subscription plan:
- Open HBO Max or sign in to HBOMax.com on your computer. Can’t sign in?
- Do one of the following:
- Phone or tablet: Tik op je profiel (rechtsboven), dan op het icoon Instellingen
en tik op of scrol naar Abonnement.
- TV device: Choose the Settings icon

To find out how to switch plans, choose your provider below (if you don't know your provider, see the previous section).
You can switch your plan on your phone, tablet, or computer. You can choose a subscription plan (Standard or Basic) and a billing period (Monthly or Yearly).
When will this change take effect?
- When you switch to monthly billing or the Basic plan, the change takes effect on your next billing date.
- When you switch to yearly billing or the Standard plan, the change is immediate. You'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes) and your next billing date will be adjusted.
HBO Max mobile app
Here’s how to change your plan:
- Open HBO Max on your phone or tablet and then tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets). Can't sign in?
- Tap the Settings icon
and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
- Tap Manage Subscription and then Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your new plan.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming your plan change.
Computer
Here’s how to change your plan:
- Go to HBOMax.com and sign in. Can't sign in?
- Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
- Choose Manage Subscription and then Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your new plan.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming your plan change.

Here’s how to change your plan:
- Go to HBOMax.com/account and sign in to your account. Can't sign in?
- Choose Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your new plan.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming your plan change.
If your subscription is billed through Apple, you can switch plans on your iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV. You can choose a subscription plan (Standard or Basic) and a billing period (Monthly or Yearly).
When will this change take effect?
- When you switch to monthly billing or the Basic plan, the change takes effect on your next billing date.
- When you switch to yearly billing or the Standard plan, the change is immediate. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your billing period, and charge you for your new plan.
iPhone or iPad
Here's how to switch your plan:
- Open HBO Max on your iPhone or iPad and then tap your profile (upper right). Can't sign in?
- Tap the Settings icon
and then Subscription.
- Tap Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Tap Continue and then confirm your new plan.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Apple.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from Apple confirming your plan change.
Apple TV
Here's how to switch your plan:
- Open HBO Max, then choose the Settings icon

- Choose Account and then Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your new plan.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Apple.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from Apple confirming your plan change.
If your subscription is billed through Google Play, you can switch plans on your Android phone, tablet, or TV. You can choose a subscription plan (Standard or Basic) and a billing period (Monthly or Yearly).
When will this change take effect?
- When you switch to monthly billing or the Basic plan, the change takes effect on your next billing date.
- When you switch to yearly billing or the Standard plan, the change is immediate. Google will give you a credit for the remaining time on your monthly subscription and apply it to your new plan. Your next billing date will be adjusted once that credit is used.
Android phone or tablet
Here's how to switch your plan:
- Open HBO Max on your Android phone and then tap your profile (upper right). Can't sign in?
- Tap the Settings icon
and then Subscription.
- Tap Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Tap Continue and then confirm your new plan.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Google Play.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from Google Play confirming your plan change.
Android TV
Here's how to switch your plan:
- Open HBO Max on your Android TV.
- Choose the Settings icon
and then choose Account.
- Choose Switch Plans.
- Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Basic and a billing period.
- Choose Continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Google Play.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan or billing period. You should get an email from Google Play confirming your plan change.
Only the Standard plan (monthly billing) is available through KPN. If you want to switch to the Basic plan, you'll need to cancel your subscription and resubscribe through a provider that offers the Basic plan.
Only the Standard plan (monthly billing) is available through VodafoneZiggo. If you want to switch to the Basic plan, you'll need to cancel your subscription and resubscribe through a provider that offers the Basic plan.
To change plans, cancel your subscription and then choose a different plan when you renew your subscription. Here's how:
- Cancel your subscription through Samsung TV.
- Wait for your subscription to expire.
- Once your subscription has expired, renew your subscription on your Samsung TV and choose a different plan. You can choose Standard or Basic and either monthly or yearly billing.
