Subtitles, captions, and alternate audio

Some shows and movies have multiple audio and subtitle languages available. You can also turn closed captions on or off on all devices.

Which device are you using?

You can turn captions or subtitles on or off, customize their appearance, and choose an alternate audio track.

Android phone or tablet, or Amazon Fire tablet

Subtitles or captions

To change subtitles or closed captions:

  1. Start watching something and then tap the screen.
  2. In the upper-right corner, tap the Audio and Subtitles button (speech bubble).
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Subtitles: Under Subtitles, tap a language.
    • Closed captions: Under Subtitles, tap English CC or Off.
  4. To change the subtitle and caption styling, tap Caption Settings, make a change, and then tap Save.
  5. Tap X to save your changes.

Alternate audio

Some shows and movies have alternate audio tracks available. To switch audio tracks:

  1. Start watching something and then tap the screen.
  2. In the upper-right corner, tap the Audio and Subtitles button (speech bubble).
  3. Under Audio, tap a language or English - Audio Description (if available), and then tap X to close.

iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Subtitles or captions

To change subtitles or closed captions:

  1. Start watching something and then tap the screen.
  2. In the upper-right corner, tap the Audio and Subtitles button (speech bubble).
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Subtitles: Under Subtitles, tap a language.
    • Closed captions: Under Subtitles, tap English CC or Off.
  4. Tap X to save your changes.

To change the caption styling, go to the Home screen on your iOS device, then Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. For more info, see Subtitles and captioning on iOS.

Alternate audio

  1. Start watching something and then tap the screen.
  2. In the upper-right corner, tap the Audio and Subtitles button (speech bubble).

Safari: Can't turn off captions

The Audio and Subtitles button doesn't toggle closed captions that you've set in macOS System Preferences. To turn off closed captions set in your Mac System Preferences, do the following:

  1. Choose the Apple menu (upper-left corner) and select System Preferences.
  2. Choose Accessibility and then choose Captions.
  3. Clear the Prefer closed captions and SDH check box. If the check box is already cleared, select the check box, and then clear it again.

When you go back to HBO Max, click the Audio and Subtitles button to turn closed captions on or off.

Amazon Fire TV

You can turn captions or subtitles on or off, customize their appearance, and choose an alternate audio track.

  1. Start watching something, then swipe down on the Apple TV remote.
  2. Choose Subtitles.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Subtitles: Choose a subtitle language.
    • Closed captions: Select Subtitles, then choose English (US) SDH or Off.
  4. Swipe up to save your changes.

To change the caption styling, on your Apple TV go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. Here you can adjust the closed captioning font, color, size, and opacity.

Alternate audio

PlayStation console

Here's how to turn closed captions on or off:

While a video is playing, scroll down to see the player controls, then scroll down again to the closed captions option.

Change appearance of closed captions

You can change the caption styling on your Playstation console. Here’s how:

  1. On your Playstation controller, press the Home button.
  2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions.
  3. Select Display Closed Captions.
  4. Choose Closed Caption Settings, then turn off Display Closed Captions as Specified by Content.

Here you can also adjust the way closed captions are displayed (e.g. the font, size and color).

Changing the subtitle language and audio track are coming soon to PlayStation consoles.

Roku

Subtitles or captions

To change subtitles or closed captions:

  • While a video is playing, press the Star button (*) on your Roku remote and then choose: On replay, Off, or On always. You can also choose Settings icon on the Home screen (lower left) and then choose Closed Captions.
  • To change the subtitle language, press the Star button (*) and navigate to Accessibility > Captioning Track and select your language.

Change appearance of closed captions

To change the caption styling, press the Home button on your Roku remote and then go to Settings > Accessibility (or Captions) > Caption style. Here you can adjust the closed captioning font, color, size, and opacity.

Alternate audio

Some shows and movies have alternate audio tracks available. To switch audio tracks:

  • While a video is playing, press the Star button (*), then choose Audio track and then choose languages.
Samsung TV

You can turn captions or subtitles on or off, customize their appearance, and choose an alternate audio track.

Subtitles or captions

To change subtitles or closed captions:

  1. Start watching something, and then press the Down button on your remote.
  2. Choose the Audio and Subtitles button (speech bubble).
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Subtitles: Choose a subtitle language.
    • Closed captions: Choose English CC.
  4. Press the back button to save your changes.

If the above closed caption steps don't work, change the closed caption setting on your Samsung TV. To do this, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Caption settings or try pressing the CC button on your remote control (settings and remotes vary depending by TV model).

  4. Press the B button to save your changes.
