Find and play titles in other languages
Some HBO Max shows and movies are available in more than one language. By default, shows and movies automatically play with the original audio track and English subtitles.
Shows and movies from around the world are available in the International genre (open the Browse menu and choose International). International HBO series and movies play with the original audio and English subtitles (no audio dubbing).
Spanish and Portuguese language content is available in the Latino genre (open the Browse menu and choose Latino). Here you'll find Latino content (A-Z), or you can narrow the list by choosing Series, Movies, or Specials.
If a show or movie is available in multiple languages, here's how to switch languages:
- While a show or movie is playing, choose the Audio and Subtitles button in the video player (on Roku, press the * button on your remote). Then, choose from the available options. To learn more, see Subtitles, captions, and alternate audio.
Some shows and movies have a language button on the show or movie's description page. You can toggle the language button to your preferred language (e.g. Spanish/English), and then choose play.
Play titles in Japanese
Some Studio Ghibli movies are available in both Japanese and English.
If a show or movie is available with Japanese audio, you'll see a button (e.g. Japanese/English) on the show or movie's description page. Toggle the language to your preferred language and then choose play. The title will play in the language that's displayed (e.g. if Japanese is displayed when you choose play, then the title will play in Japanese with English subtitles).
