Change an HBO-billed subscription
HBO Max subscriptions are available through many providers. How you change or manage your subscription varies by billing provider (your billing provider is who you signed up through or who bills you for HBO Max).
First, find out who your subscription is billed through:
- Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
- Do one of the following:
- Phone or tablet: Tap your profile (upper right), the Settings icon
, and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
- TV device: Choose the Settings icon
and then choose Account.
- Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles.

Other ways to find your billing provider:
- HBOMax.com/account: Go to HBOMax.com/account and sign in to your HBO Max account.
- Bank statement: You can also review your bank statement for an HBO Max subscription charge. If your subscription charge lists help.HBOMax.com, then your subscription is likely billed through us (HBO Europe, s.r.o. or HBO Nordic AB).

When is my next billing date?
Your subscription automatically renews on your billing date. To find your next billing date:
- Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
- Do one of the following:
- Phone or tablet: Tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets), and then the Settings icon (upper left). Choose Subscription.
- Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles.

How do I cancel?
Your subscription automatically renews each month or year until you cancel. To find out when your subscription will renew, see When is my next billing date?
Ways to cancel
On your phone or tablet, do the following:
- Open HBO Max, tap your profile (upper right), and then the Settings icon

- Tap or scroll to Subscription and then choose Manage Subscription.
If you don't have this option, choose Learn More or find your billing provider on this page. - Tap Cancel Subscription.
- Confirm your cancellation and take note of your expiration date. You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.
On your computer, do the following:
- Go to HBOMax.com on your computer and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
- Choose Manage Subscription.
If you don't have this option, choose Learn More or find your billing provider on this page. - Choose Cancel Subscription.
- Confirm your cancellation and take note of your expiration date. You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.
On your phone or computer, do the following:
- Go to HBOMax.com/account. Can't sign in?
- Enter your HBO Max email and password and then choose Sign In. Can't sign in?
- Choose Cancel Subscription.
If you don't have this option, choose Learn More or find your billing provider on this page. - Confirm your cancellation and take note of your expiration date. You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.
Once canceled, you'll get an email from us confirming your cancellation. If you change your mind about cancelling, you can go repeat the steps above and choose Resume Subscription (instead of Cancel). Once your subscription has expired, you can resubscribe to HBO Max to start streaming again.
How do I change my billing period?
If your subscription is billed through HBO Europe, s.r.o. or HBO Nordic AB, you can switch your billing period (monthly or yearly) using the HBO Max mobile app or your computer.
On your phone or tablet:
- Open HBO Max and then tap your profile (upper right). Can't sign in?
- Tap the Settings icon
and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
- Tap Manage Subscription and then Switch Plans.
Manage Subscription isn't available? Take note of who your subscription is billed through and see Change my subscription. - Choose your subscription: Monthly or Yearly.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your new change.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming the change.
On your computer:
- Sign in to HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
- Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
- Choose Manage Subscription and then Switch Plans.
Manage Subscription isn't available? Take note of who your subscription is billed through and see Change my subscription. - Choose your subscription: Monthly or Yearly.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your change.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming the change.
On your phone or computer:
- Go to HBOMax.com/account and sign in to your account. Can't sign in?
- Choose Switch Plans.
Switch Plans isn't available? Take note of who your subscription is billed through and see Change my subscription. - Choose your subscription: Monthly or Yearly.
- Choose Continue and then confirm your change.
Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming the change.
When will this change take effect?
- Switch to Monthly billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your yearly billing period).
- Switch to Yearly billing: This change is effective immediately. You'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes) and your next billing date will be in 1 year.
To cancel a billing period change that isn't effective immediately, sign in at HBOMax.com/account and choose Cancel Pending Plan Change.
What if the charge isn't what I expected?
If your charge looks different than you expected, here are a few possible reasons:
- Applicable taxes are added to your subscription charge and they're based on your current location.
- You may have a different billing period than you thought (yearly or monthly).
- Your promotional or discounted period may have ended and you were charged the standard subscription rate.
If none of these reasons apply and you're billed through us (HBO Nordic AB), please contact us for help (instead of your payment service). If you're billed through another company, contact them for help.
How do I change my payment method?
You can use any of the following: Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal.
Your credit or debit card needs to support automatic recurring payments and be issued in the country where you're signing up.
There are a few ways you can change your payment method for your subscription.

On your phone or tablet, do the following:
- Open HBO Max, tap your profile (upper right), and then the Settings icon

- Tap or scroll to Subscription and then choose Manage Subscription.
If you don't have this option, choose Learn More or find your billing provider on this page. - Tap Edit Payment Method.
- Edit your payment info and choose Save.
- Your bank may require you to verify your identity with 3D-Secure before authorizing the transaction. If you have trouble with 3D-Secure, please contact your bank.
Your updated payment info will be used for your next subscription charge.
On your computer, do the following:
- Sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer and then go to Profile (upper right). Can't sign in?
- Choose Settings, then find Subscription, and choose Manage Subscription.
If you don't have this option, choose Learn More or find your billing provider on this page. - Choose Edit Payment Method.
- Edit your payment info and choose Save.
- Your bank may require you to verify your identity with 3D-Secure before authorizing the transaction. If you have trouble with 3D-Secure, please contact your bank.
Your updated payment info will be used for your next subscription charge.
