Change an Apple-billed subscription

If you signed up using the HBO Max app on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, then your subscription is billed through Apple.

First, confirm that your subscription is Apple-billed:

Find my billing provider
  1. Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
    Mobile Plan
    If you subscribe to the Mobile plan, open HBO Max on your phone or tablet.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets), and then the Settings icon (upper left). Choose Subscription.
    • Roku: Choose the Settings icon (lower left) and then choose Account.
    • Other TV device: Choose your profile (upper left) and then choose Account.
    • Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Subscription.
      Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles.
  3. Here you can see who your subscription is billed through:
    • iTunes: See info below.
    • Another provider: Find your billing provider on this page.

How do I cancel my Apple-billed subscription?

Your subscription automatically renews until you cancel. To find out when your subscription will renew, see What's my next billing date?

Important
To avoid being charged for your next billing period, cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Uninstalling the HBO Max app will not cancel your subscription.

To cancel, follow Apple's cancellation steps or the steps below.

Which device are you using?

iPhone or iPad

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription. Choose Cancel Subscription.
Apple TV

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open Settings on your Apple TV.
  2. Select Users & Accounts, then select account.
  3. Select Subscriptions.
  4. Select HBO Max and then Cancel Subscription.

Can't find an HBO Max subscription?

Try these things:

  1. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase your subscription.
  2. Go to the Apple device where you started your HBO Max subscription and view your subscriptions using the steps above.
  3. See Apple's Subscription is not listed article.

Once canceled, you should get an email from Apple confirming your cancellation. You can continue to stream until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.

What's my next billing date?

Your first charge happens after your free trial. Thereafter, your subscription will auto-renew on a recurring basis until you cancel it. You pay for your subscription at the beginning of your billing period.

You can find your next billing date in the Apple App Store. Here's how:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription.

How do I change my payment method?

Apple-billed subscriptions are billed to your Apple ID payment method.

To change your payment method on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Payment & Shipping (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Tap the payment method you want to change, then edit your information.

What is my current plan?

To find out which subscription plan you have, do the following:

  1. Open HBO Max or sign in to HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
    Mobile Plan
    If you try to sign in on your computer and see an error message directing you to sign in on your mobile device, it means that you have the Mobile plan.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets) and then tap the Settings icon (upper left). Choose Subscription.
    • Roku: Choose the Settings icon (lower left) and then choose Account.
    • Other TV device: Choose your profile (upper left) and then choose Account.

How do I change my plan?

If your subscription is billed through Apple, you can switch plans on your iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV. You can choose a subscription plan (Standard or Mobile) and billing period.

iPhone or iPad

Here's how to switch your plan:

  1. Open the HBO Max app and then tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets.) Can't sign in?
  2. Tap the Settings icon (upper left) and then Subscription.
  3. Tap Switch Plans.
  4. Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Mobile and a billing period.
  5. Tap Select Plan and then confirm your new plan.
  6. Tap Subscribe and enter your Apple ID password if prompted.

Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming your plan change.

Apple TV
Mobile Plan
If you subscribe to the Mobile plan, you can’t switch plans on your Apple TV. Use your iPhone or iPad instead.

Here's how to switch your plan:

  1. Open HBO Max, then choose your profile (upper left).
  2. Choose Account and then Switch Plans.
  3. Choose the subscription plan you'd like: Standard or Mobile and a billing period.
  4. Choose Select Plan and then confirm your new plan.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Apple.

Your subscription is updated to your new plan or billing period. You should get an email from Apple confirming your plan change.

When will this change take effect?

Plan Change

  1. Switch to Mobile: This change takes effect on your next billing date. You continue to have access to all Standard plan features until your next billing date.
  2. Switch to Standard: This change happens immediately—you now have access to all Standard plan features. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your Mobile plan billing period and charge you for the Standard plan (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be adjusted.

Billing Period Change

  1. Switch to 1 month billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your 3-month or annual billing period).
  2. Switch to 3 month billing:
    Changing from 1 month billing: This change is effective immediately. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your monthly subscription period and charge you the 3 month price (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 3 months.
    Changing from 12 month billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your annual billing period).
  3. Switch to 12 month billing: This change is effective immediately. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your subscription period and charge you the 12 month price (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 1 year.
