Change an Apple-billed subscription

If you signed up using the HBO Max app on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, then your subscription is billed through Apple.

First, confirm that your subscription is Apple-billed:

Find my billing provider
  1. Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap your profile (upper right), the Settings icon (cog, upper right), and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose the Settings icon (cog, lower left) and then choose Account.
    • Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
      Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles.
  3. Here you can see who your subscription is billed through:
    • iTunes: See info below.
    • Another provider: Find your billing provider on this page.

Other ways to find your billing provider:

  • HBOMax.com/account: Sign in at HBOMax.com/account.
  • Bank statement: You can also review your bank statement for an HBO Max subscription charge. If your subscription charge lists iTunes Store, App Store, Apple, or something similar, then your subscription is Apple-billed.

How do I cancel my Apple-billed subscription?

Your subscription automatically renews until you cancel. To find out when your subscription will renew, see What's my next billing date?

Important
To avoid being charged for your next billing period, cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Uninstalling the HBO Max app will not cancel your subscription.

Which device are you using?

iPhone or iPad

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription. Choose Cancel Subscription.
Apple TV

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open Settings on your Apple TV.
  2. Select Users & Accounts, then select account.
  3. Select Subscriptions.
  4. Select HBO Max and then Cancel Subscription.

Can't find an HBO Max subscription?

Try these things:

  1. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase your subscription.
  2. Go to the Apple device where you started your HBO Max subscription and view your subscriptions using the steps above.
  3. See Apple's Subscription is not listed article.

Once canceled, you should get an email from Apple confirming your cancellation. You can continue to stream until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.

What's my next billing date?

Your first charge happens when you start your subscription. Thereafter, your subscription will auto-renew on a recurring basis until you cancel it. You pay for your subscription at the beginning of your billing period.

You can find your next billing date in the Apple App Store. Here's how:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription.
  5. Here you can see your next billing date.

How do I change my billing period?

If your subscription is billed through Apple, you can switch your billing period (monthly or yearly) on your iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV.

Important
When you switch to yearly billing, Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your monthly subscription period and charge you the yearly price (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 1 year.
iPhone or iPad

Here's how to change your billing period:

  1. Open HBO Max and then tap your profile (upper right). Can't sign in?
  2. Tap the Settings icon (cog, upper right) and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
  3. Tap Switch Plans.
    If Switch Plans isn't available, take note of who your subscription is billed through and see View your subscription.
  4. Choose a billing period: Monthly or Yearly.
  5. Choose Continue and then confirm your change.

Your subscription is updated to your new billing period. You'll get an email from Apple confirming your change.

Apple TV

Here's how to switch your billing period:

  1. Open HBO Max, then choose the Settings icon (cog, lower left).
  2. Choose Account and then Switch Plans.
    If Switch Plans isn't available, take note of who your subscription is billed through and see View your subscription.
  3. Choose a billing period: Monthly or Yearly.
  4. Choose Continue and then confirm your change.

Your subscription is updated to your new billing period. You'll get an email from Apple confirming your change.

When will this change take effect?

Subscription Change

  • Switch to Monthly billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your yearly billing period).
  • Switch to Yearly billing: This change is effective immediately. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your monthly subscription period and charge you the yearly price (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 1 year.

How do I change my payment method?

Apple-billed subscriptions are billed to your Apple ID payment method.

To change your payment method on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Payment & Shipping (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Tap the payment method you want to change, then edit your information.
