Change a Roku-billed subscription

If you subscribed using the HBO Max app on a Roku streaming device, then your subscription is billed through Roku.

First, confirm that your subscription is Roku-billed:

Find my billing provider
  1. Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap your profile (upper right), the Settings icon (cog, upper right), and then tap or scroll to Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose the Settings icon (cog, lower left) and then choose Account.
    • Web: Sign in at HBOMax.com/account.
    • Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Settings, and find Subscription.
      (Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles).
  3. Here you'll find who your subscription is billed through:
    • Roku Pay: See info below.
    • Another provider: Find your billing provider on this page.
  • Bank statement: You can also review your bank statement for an HBO Max subscription charge. If your subscription charge lists Roku, Roku Pay, or something similar, then your subscription is likely billed through Roku.

How do I cancel my Roku-billed subscription?

Your subscription automatically renews each billing period until you cancel. To find out when your subscription will renew, see When will my subscription renew?

Important
To avoid being charged for your next billing period, cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Uninstalling the HBO Max app will not cancel your subscription.

To cancel, follow Roku’s cancellation steps or the steps below.

Which device would you like to use?

Roku streaming device
  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  2. Use the directional pad on your remote to highlight HBO Max.
  3. Press the Star button (*) to open the Options menu.
  4. Choose Manage subscription then Cancel subscription. If Manage subscription is not available, try these same steps on each Roku streaming device you own.
Web
  1. Go to my.roku.com and sign in.
  2. Choose the Manage your subscriptions link (under Manage account).
  3. Find HBO Max in your Active Subscriptions.
  4. Select Cancel subscription and then confirm.

You should get an email from Roku confirming your cancellation. You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.

Can't find an HBO Max subscription?

  • Make sure you're signed in with the same Roku account that purchased your subscription (you may have more than one Roku account).
  • Go to the Roku streaming device where you started your HBO Max subscription and follow the Roku streaming device cancellation steps above. If you still can’t find the Roku account with your HBO Max subscription, contact Roku Support for help.

When will my subscription renew?

Your first charge happens when you start your subscription. Thereafter, your subscription will auto-renew on a recurring basis until you cancel it. You pay for your subscription in advance of the covered month.

To find out when your subscription will renew:

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  2. Use the directional pad on your remote to highlight HBO Max.
  3. Press the Star button (*) to open the Options menu.
  4. Select Manage subscription to see the renewal date.
Web
  1. Go to my.roku.com and sign in to your Roku account.
  2. Choose the Manage your subscriptions link (under Manage account).
  3. Find HBO Max in your Active Subscriptions. Take note of the date after Renews.

To find out which subscription plan you have, do the following:

  1. Open HBO Max or sign in to HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?

How do I change plans?

If your subscription is billed through Roku, you can switch plans on your Roku device. You can choose a subscription plan (Ad-Free or With Ads) or a billing period (monthly or yearly).

Important
When you switch to yearly billing or the Ad-Free plan, you'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes) and your next billing date will be adjusted.
  1. Open HBO Max on your Roku device.
  2. Choose the Settings icon (cog, lower left) and then choose Account.
  3. Choose Switch Plans.
  4. Choose the subscription plan (With Ads or Ad-Free) and billing period that you'd like.
  5. Choose Select Plan and then confirm your new plan.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Roku.

Your subscription is updated to your new plan or billing period. You should get an email from Roku confirming your plan change.

When will this change take effect?

Plan Change

  • Switch to With Ads: This change takes effect on your next billing date. You can continue streaming without ads until your next billing date.
  • Switch to Ad-Free: This change happens immediately—you can stream everything without ads. You'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes) and your next billing date will be adjusted.

Billing Period Change

  • Switch to Monthly billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your yearly billing period).
  • Switch to Yearly billing: This change is effective immediately. You'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 1 year.
Downloads
If you switch to the With Ads plan, you won't be able to play titles that you've downloaded.
