How to add, manage and switch profiles

When you sign in to HBO Max, you'll see the Who Is Watching? screen. This is where you can choose who's watching and manage profiles for people in your household.

Profiles help you keep track of what you've watched (so you can continue watching where you left off) and what you'd like to watch (My List).

Xfinity Devices
The HBO Max app on Xfinity devices doesn't support multiple profiles just yet. Your primary profile (the one created when you signed up) is automatically selected on your Xfinity device.

Add a profile

You can add profiles for adults and kids in your household. Your account can have a total of 5 profiles. There are two types of profiles: Adult and Kid.

Note  The HBO Max app on Xfinity devices doesn't support multiple profiles just yet.

To add an Adult profile

  1. Choose your profile icon.
  2. Choose Switch Profiles.
  3. Choose + Add Adult on the 'Who is Watching?' screen.
  4. Enter a name, pick a color, and then choose Save.

To add a Kid profile

  1. Choose your profile icon.
  2. Choose Switch Profiles.
  3. Choose + Add Kid on the 'Who is Watching?' screen. If your account doesn't have a PIN, you'll be asked to create one.
  4. Enter your child's name and their birth date (month and year), choose a color, and then choose Next.
  5. Choose the content ratings that your child can watch. Movies and TV shows with ratings above what you select can't be watched by this profile. By default, your child can't switch to another profile (without your PIN).
  6. Choose Save.

When a Kid profile is active, you'll see the Kids Home screen. To learn more, see All about Kid profiles.

If your account has more than one profile with the same letter, use different colors to help differentiate between profiles.

Switch profiles

To switch to another profile:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • TV device: Choose the profile icon in the upper-left corner (circle with a letter).
    • Phone or tablet: Choose the Profile icon (along the bottom on phones, along the left on tablets).
    • Computer: Choose the profile icon in the upper-right corner (circle with a letter).
  2. Choose Switch Profiles.
  3. Choose a profile. Kid profiles have a lock icon. A closed lock icon means that your child can't switch to another profile (a PIN is needed), while an open lock means your child can switch to another profile.

When you switch to a Kid profile, you'll see the Kids Home screen. To learn more, see All about Kid profiles.

Who is watching?

Here's what happens when you open HBO Max:

  • TV or computer: If the last profile used was a Kids profile, then HBO Max uses this profile. If the last profile used was an Adult profile, you'll see the 'Who is Watching' screen when you open HBO Max.
  • Phone or tablet: HBO Max always opens with the last profile used (you won't see the 'Who is Watching' screen).
