Video player options and settings

There are a number of video player options available in HBO Max.

Which device are you using?

To see your video options, tap the screen when you're watching something.

Options at the bottom of the screen

Play/Pause

Tap the Play/Pause button (lower-left corner) to toggle between play and pause.

Skip/Forward

Next, there are buttons to skip forward or backwards 15 seconds.

Video progress bar

The video progress bar shows you where you are in the video you’re watching. You can tap anywhere on the bar, or tap and drag your location (the dot). The elapsed time appears before the bar and the time remaining appears after.

Closed captions

Tap the CC or Dialogue button to toggle closed captions on or off. To learn more, see Closed captions.

Full screen

Tap the Full screen button (lower-right corner) to expand the video. To exit full screen, tap the Full screen button again.

Picture in Picture (iOS only)

Tap the Picture in Picture button (two rectangles) to continue watching HBO Max while you use other apps on your iPad or iPhone. To learn more, see Picture in Picture on iOS.

Note  Picture in Picture is available for Apple iPad (iOS 9.0 +) and iPhone (iOS 14).

Chromecast

Tap the Google Cast button to stream HBO Max from your phone or tablet to your TV. To learn more, see Cast to your TV using Chromecast.

AirPlay (iOS only)

Tap the AirPlay button to stream HBO Max from your iOS device to your AirPlay-2 compatible device. To learn more, see AirPlay video to your TV.

Volume

To adjust the volume, tap and drag the sound level (the dot) on the volume bar, or use the volume controls on your phone or tablet.

To see your video options, click the screen when you're watching something.

Options at the bottom of the video

Play/Pause

Click the Play/Pause button (lower-left corner) to toggle between play and pause. You can also use the Spacebar.

Skip back

Next, there's a button to skip back 15 seconds.

Video progress bar

The video progress bar shows you where you are in the video you’re watching. You can click anywhere on the bar, or click and drag your location (the dot). The elapsed time and time remaining appear below the bar.

Chromecast

Click the Google Cast button to stream HBO Max from your computer to your TV. To learn more, see Cast to your TV using Chromecast.

Volume

To adjust the volume, click the Sound button (lower-right) and then click and drag the sound level (the dot) on the volume bar. You can also use the volume controls on your computer.

Closed captions

Click the CC button to toggle closed captions on or off. When closed captions are on, audio is displayed as text on the screen. To learn more, see Closed captions.

Full screen

Click the Full screen button (lower-right corner) to expand the video to full screen. To exit full screen, click the Full screen button again or press the Esc key.

Play/Pause

When you're watching something, here's how to toggle between play and pause:

Amazon Fire TV

Press the Play/Pause button on your Amazon Fire TV remote.

Android TV

Press the D-pad center button on your Android TV remote.

Apple TV

Press the Touch surface or the Play/Pause button on your Apple TV remote.

PlayStation 4

Press the X button on your PS4 controller.

Samsung TV

Press the D-pad center button on your Samsung TV remote.

Xbox console

Press the A button on your Xbox controller.

Fast forward or rewind

While you’re watching something, here’s how to fast forward and rewind:

Amazon Fire TV

Press the Forward/Rewind button on your Amazon Fire TV remote.

Android TV

Press and hold the D-pad right button to fast forward and the D-pad left button to rewind.

Apple TV

Press and hold the left or right side of the Touch surface to fast forward or rewind (on your Apple TV remote). You can also press the left side of the Touch surface to skip back by 10 seconds, and the right side to skip forward by 10 seconds.

PlayStation 4

Press the R2 button to fast forward and the L2 button to rewind.

Samsung TV

Press the D-pad right button to fast forward and the D-pad left button to rewind.

Xbox console

Press the D-pad right button to fast forward and the D-pad left button to rewind (or the Left or Right bumper).

Video progress bar

The video progress bar shows you where you are in the video you're watching.

While you’re watching something, here’s how to use the progress bar:

Amazon Fire TV

Press the Play/Pause button on your Amazon Fire TV remote and then using the navigation ring scroll left or right.

Android TV

Press the D-pad center button on your remote, then press the D-pad right button to go forward and the D-pad left button to go backwards on the progress bar.

Apple TV

Press the Touch surface on your Apple TV remote, then swipe left or right to go forward or backwards on the progress bar.

PlayStation 4

Press the X button on your controller, then press the L1 button to go backwards and the R1 button to go forward on the progress bar.

Samsung TV

Press the D-pad center button on your remote, then press the D-pad right button to go forward and the D-pad left button to go backwards on the progress bar.

Xbox console

Move the Left stick on your controller, then use the Left or Right bumper to go forward or backwards on the progress bar.

Closed captions

When closed captions are on, audio is displayed as text on the screen. To learn more, see Closed captions.

Skip Intro

When you start watching something, you may see a Skip or Skip Intro button in the lower-right corner of your screen. Choose this button to skip the content that plays before your show or movie. To learn more, see Skip Intro.
