How to add, manage and switch profiles

When you sign in to HBO Max, you'll see the Who Is Watching? screen. This is where you can choose who's watching and manage profiles for people in your household.

Profiles help you keep track of what you've watched (so you can continue watching where you left off) and what you'd like to watch (My List).

Add a profile

You can add profiles for adults and kids in your household. Your account can have a total of 5 profiles. There are two types of profiles: Adult and Kid.

Add an Adult profile
  1. Do one of the following:
    • TV device: Choose your profile icon in the upper-left corner.
    • Phone or tablet: Choose the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets).
    • Computer: Choose your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Choose Switch Profiles.
  3. Choose Add Adult.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap the Camera icon and then choose to take a photo, upload a picture, or choose a character (for more info, see add profile pictures). Then, pick a color and enter a name.
    • TV or computer: Enter a name and pick a color (you can add profile pictures later).
  5. Choose Save.
Add a Kid profile
  3. Choose Add Kid. If your account doesn't have a PIN, you'll be asked to create one.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap the Camera icon and then choose to take a photo, upload a picture, or choose a character (for more info, see add profile pictures). Then, pick a color and enter your child's name and birth date (month and year).
    • TV or computer: Enter your child's name and birth date (month and year) and then pick a color (you can add profile pictures later).
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Choose the content ratings that your child can watch. Movies and TV shows with ratings above what you select can't be watched by this profile. By default, your child can't switch to another profile (without your PIN).
  7. Choose Save.

When a Kid profile is active, you'll see the Kids Home screen. To learn more, see All about Kid profiles.

Switch profiles

To switch to another profile:

  3. Choose a profile. Kid profiles have a Lock icon. A closed lock means that your child can't switch to another profile (a PIN is needed), while an open lock means your child can switch to another profile.

When you switch to a Kid profile, you'll see the Kids Home screen. To learn more, see All about Kid profiles.

Who is watching screen

Here's what happens when you open HBO Max:

  • TV or computer: If the last profile used was a Kid profile, HBO Max will open with this profile. If the last profile was an Adult profile, you'll see the 'Who is Watching' screen when you open HBO Max.
  • Phone or tablet: HBO Max always opens with the last profile used (you won't see the 'Who is Watching' screen).

Edit a profile

There are two types of profiles: Adult and Kid. On the 'Who is Watching?' screen, Kid profiles have a Lock icon.

To edit a profile:

  1. Choose your profile icon.
  2. Choose Switch Profiles.
  3. Choose Manage Profiles.
  4. Choose a profile. Kid profiles have a Lock icon.

  9. Choose Save.

About profile pictures

  • Adult and Kid profiles each have their own library of characters to choose from.
  • The maximum file size for a profile picture is 10 MB (if you upload a picture larger than 10 MB, the picture won't save with your profile).
  • To remove a character or picture, tap the Camera icon and then choose Remove Character or Remove Photo.
  • We'll be adding more profile characters. To request a character from an HBO Max show or movie, please use our feedback form.
