Change an Apple-billed subscription

If you signed up using the HBO Max app on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, then your subscription is billed through Apple.

First, confirm that your subscription is Apple-billed:

Find my billing provider
  1. Open HBO Max or sign in at HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets), and then the Settings icon (upper left). Choose Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose your profile (upper left) and then choose Account.
    • Computer: Choose your profile (upper right), then choose Subscription.
      Subscription information is only available with Adult profiles.
  3. Here you can see who your subscription is billed through:
    • iTunes: See info below.
    • Another provider: Find your billing provider on this page.
    Bank statement: You can also review your bank statement for an HBO Max subscription charge. If your subscription charge lists iTunes Store, App Store, Apple, or something similar, then your subscription is Apple-billed.

How do I cancel my Apple-billed subscription?

Your subscription automatically renews until you cancel. To find out when your subscription will renew, see What's my next billing date?

Important
If you don't cancel more than 24 hours before your renewal date, your subscription might renew. Uninstalling the HBO Max app will not cancel your subscription.

To cancel, follow Apple's cancellation steps or the steps below.

Which device are you using?

iPhone or iPad

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription. Choose Cancel Subscription.
Apple TV

Here's how to cancel your subscription:

  1. Open Settings on your Apple TV.
  2. Select Users & Accounts, then select account.
  3. Select Subscriptions.
  4. Select HBO Max and then Cancel Subscription.
Computer

Can't find an HBO Max subscription?

Try these things:

  1. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase your subscription.
  2. Go to the Apple device where you started your HBO Max subscription and view your subscriptions using the steps above.
  3. See Apple's Subscription is not listed article.

Once canceled, you should get an email from Apple confirming your cancellation. You can continue to stream until your subscription expires at the end of your billing cycle.

What's my next billing date?

Your first charge happens when you start your subscription. Thereafter, your subscription will auto-renew on a recurring basis until you cancel it. You pay for your subscription at the beginning of your billing period.

You can find your next billing date in the Apple App Store. Here's how:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Subscriptions (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Find and tap your HBO Max subscription.
  5. Here you can see your next billing date.

How do I change my payment method?

Apple-billed subscriptions are billed to your Apple ID payment method.

To change your payment method on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Payment & Shipping (if prompted, sign in with your Apple ID).
  4. Tap the payment method you want to change, then edit your information.

To find out which subscription plan you have, do the following:

  1. Open HBO Max or sign in to HBOMax.com on your computer. Can't sign in?
  2. Do one of the following:

How do I change plans?

If your subscription is billed through Apple, you can switch plans on your iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV. You can choose a subscription plan (Ad-Free or With Ads) or a billing period (monthly or yearly).

iPhone or iPad

Here's how to switch your plan:

  1. Open the HBO Max app and then tap the Profile icon (bottom edge on phones, left edge on tablets.) Can't sign in?
  2. Tap the Settings icon (upper left) and then Subscription.
  3. Tap Switch Plans.
    If Switch Plans isn't available, you'll need to cancel your subscription, wait for your subscription to expire, then resubscribe to HBO Max on your iPhone or iPad. When you resubscribe you can choose the plan and billing period that you'd like. If you need help with this, contact us.
  4. Choose the subscription plan you'd like: With Ads or Ad-Free.
  5. Choose a billing period: Monthly or Yearly.
  6. Choose Select Plan and then confirm your new plan.

Your subscription is updated to your new plan. You'll get an email from us confirming your plan change.

Apple TV

Here's how to switch your plan:

  1. Open HBO Max, then choose your profile (upper left).
  2. Choose Account and then Switch Plans.
    If Switch Plans isn't available, you'll need to turn off auto-renewal, wait for your subscription to expire, then resubscribe to HBO Max on your Apple TV. When you resubscribe you can choose the plan and billing period that you'd like. If you need help with this, contact us.
  3. Choose the subscription plan you'd like: With Ads or Ad-Free.
  4. Choose a billing period: Monthly or Yearly.
  5. Choose Select Plan and then confirm your new plan.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete your plan change through Apple.

Your subscription is updated to your new plan or billing period. You should get an email from Apple confirming your plan change.

When will this change take effect?

Plan Change

  1. Switch to With Ads: This change takes effect on your next billing date. You can continue streaming without ads until your next billing date.
  2. Switch to Ad-Free: This change happens immediately—you can stream everything without ads. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your With Ads billing period and charge you for the Ad-Free plan (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be adjusted.

Billing Period Change

  1. Switch to Monthly billing: This change takes effect on your next billing date (at the end of your yearly billing period).
  2. Switch to Yearly billing: This change is effective immediately. Apple will refund you for the remaining days in your monthly subscription period and charge you the yearly price (plus applicable taxes). Your next billing date will be in 1 year.
Downloads
If you switch to the With Ads plan, you won't be able to play titles that you've downloaded.
